SCHRAMM BEDS
ORIGINS
COMPLETE
What is the secret to a completely restful night’s sleep? What do beds and mattresses need to be like to allow us to sleep soundly? Which materials are pleasant on the skin? And how should they be processed to ensure a balanced sleeping climate in summer and winter without sweating or freezing?
These are the questions that we, the second generation of bed specialists, are passionate about. Driven by our passion for maximum sleeping comfort, we are always on the lookout for the perfect bed. In 2004, we became aware of a bed manufacturer that outshines everything else on the bed market today in terms of technical sophistication and craftsmanship: Schramm Werkstätten.
The box-spring beds from the traditional Palatinate company can be called unique without any exaggeration: Each bed is skilfully handcrafted and unique. Lovingly crafted details give the timelessly elegant design its unmistakable character. The craftsmanship of the upholsterers, carpenters and seamstresses is combined with state-of-the-art production techniques. In-depth knowledge of sleep research, medicine and materials science turns the beds, which are made entirely from natural materials, into thermal masterpieces.
It is this love of perfection in detail that has connected us with the Schramm company for over 10 years and has made us what we are today: absolute specialists and Berlin’s largest supplier of box spring beds from Schramm.

The SCHRAMM label
Tradition – Handmade in Germany
Europe, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Russia, South Africa – SCHRAMM has long since become an internationally recognised brand. Behind the name lies a Palatinate family business with almost 100 years of company history: Schramm Werkstätten GmbH. Founded in 1923 in Winnweiler by Karl Schramm as an upholstery and saddlery, the company specialised in the production of high-quality mattresses and base mattresses from the 1960s onwards. This was soon followed by the company’s own bed creations and the development of the complex two-mattress systems, whose unique technology made the company famous. In 1998, Axel Schramm, the third generation, took over the management of the company. With the construction of a modern production hall and a new production, warehouse and dispatch building, he consistently led Schramm Werkstätten into the 21st century: Since then, the precision of traditional craftsmanship has been combined with state-of-the-art production organisation – enabling completely new processing techniques. Three unique patents have already been developed: the shoulder mount (1990), the secondary contour adjustment S.C.A. (2003) and the GRAND CRU three-mat scratch system (2011). Under the leadership of Axel Schramm as managing partner, around 180 employees now manufacture top-class sleep products. Around 400 specialised retail partners represent Schramm products worldwide.

Cooperation
Our collaboration with Schramm Werkstätten began over ten years ago. We approached the company in 2004 because we were interested in the two-mattress system developed by Schramm: the interaction of a pocket spring core top mattress with an adjustable base mattress, which allows the springs to be precisely adjusted to the individual body contours with the help of the so-called secondary contour adjustment. This further development of the classic box spring system, which is unique in its precision, has confirmed our experience that the finely oscillating interplay between the top mattress and the flexible base mattress produces an unrivalled restful sleep.
In 2004, we exhibited the first Schramm box spring bed – not realising that just under a decade later, we would be Berlin’s largest supplier of Schramm beds. It was two developments that finally led to the decision in 2012 to dedicate a separate exhibition to the beds: firstly, the very close partnership with the Schramm company, and secondly, the rapidly growing interest in Schramm products. The result was a Schramm showroom in 2012 that is unique in its size and variety in Berlin.
THE SCHRAMM MATERIALS
500 cylinder springs individually sewn by hand into nettle pockets, hand-drawn springs, hand-applied monograms – it is the perfection in the detail that characterises the unique quality of Schramm beds. 100 working hours are spent in the upholstery, tailoring and carpentry departments of the Schramm workshops on the production of each bed.
With the greatest craftsmanship, modern production technology and using the highest quality raw materials and natural materials, masterpieces are created here that are unrivalled anywhere in the world. Each bed is unique and customised.
Natural materials
Silk, cashmere and camel hair, bamboo fibres, down and linen, cotton and virgin sheep’s wool from French free-range sheep: only precious natural materials are used for Schramm beds. Based on extensive knowledge of modern sleep research, the outstanding thermal properties of these materials are utilised. In combination with the equally natural, unconsolidated and unglued upholstery materials, an optimum natural sleeping climate is created – soothing, healthy and restful.

Sustainability
The highest quality and excellence are the decisive selection criteria for raw materials. However, SCHRAMM also attaches just as much importance to sustainability in their production, procurement and processing. For example, some of the fabrics woven in the Schramm workshops are made entirely from yarns made from recycled materials. Only Talalay natural latex from the tropical rubber tree is used for the upholstery of the mattresses. This naturally renewable raw material not only has excellent thermal properties. It is also far more energy-efficient to process than comparable synthetic materials. What’s more, the disposal of this purely plant-based material is also climate-neutral. Recycled materials are also surprisingly easy to care for and therefore particularly durable.
Furnace-tempered steel springs
A trademark and special quality factor of Schramm beds are their hand-drawn and oven-tempered steel springs. Unique in the world, the traditional process of oven-tempering – a method of hardening steel – is actually only used in the Schramm workshops today. Similar to a good wine, oven-tempering ensures a kind of quality maturing process: slow heating to very high temperatures and subsequent cooling makes the steel of the previously individually hand-wound springs extremely strong and tough. This not only protects the springs against plastic deformation or breakage. Their high strength also prevents any loss of flexibility and resilience – the springs remain permanently elastic and resistant to wear, fatigue or overloading. However, it is not only the special elasticity of the springs that gives Schramm mattresses their almost lifelong quality. Unlike conventional pocket spring mattresses, Schramm uses either six-, nine- or twelve-coil cylinder springs for the various sections of a mattress. Each individual spring is also sewn by hand into its own nettle pocket. This allows the springs of different heights to adapt precisely to the contours of the body and react independently to the movements and weight distribution of the sleeper.

Sleeping climate
The all-important factor for a healthy and natural sleeping climate is air circulation, especially within the mattresses and upholstery materials. Air must be able to circulate in all directions in order to completely remove the moisture released by the body. At Schramm, elaborate craftsmanship is used to ensure optimum regulation of the bed climate: unlike in mattress production today, the upholstery materials and cover fabrics of the mattresses are not glued together in an airtight manner, but are connected and fixed together using an elaborate blind stitching process. This allows air to flow through the various upholstery layers from all directions. In addition, the pocket spring core fabric woven entirely from cotton supports the removal of moisture from the mattresses. Last but not least, it is the excellent thermal properties of the selected materials that naturally regulate the release of moisture from the skin: Natural fabrics such as cotton, virgin sheep’s wool, silk, linen or cashmere adapt marvellously to the body temperature and thus enable undisturbed sleep without sweating or freezing.
