The 2 mattress system

The most widely used mattresses and sleep systems today are all-foam mattresses and slatted frame systems. However, the so-called box-spring beds, which are usually associated with America, have been experiencing a renaissance in recent years. Numerous studies have shown that the box spring system consisting of two mattresses is far superior to other sleeping systems. The founders of Schramm Werkstätten – trained upholsterers – already suspected this almost 100 years ago – and have not stopped refining the tried-and-tested two-mattress system to this day. The unsurpassed sleeping comfort of the box spring system is based on the synergy effect of a highly elastic, selectively reacting upper mattress and a stable, flatly reacting lower mattress.

3 mattress system

GRAND CRU – the world’s only sleeping system with three mattresses – represents the perfection of the box spring mattress system that Schramm is constantly developing further. Named after one of the finest French grape varieties, the three-mattress system patented in Europe also sets new standards in terms of sleeping comfort and technology at Schramm. Unlike the two-mattress systems, the SILHOUETTE intermediate mattress provides an even more differentiated spring force. The basis is the handmade DIVAN underblanket. The dynamics of the extremely firm, oven-tempered springs in the base activate the sensitive interaction with the elastic and softer spring force of the intermediate mattress. Special processing techniques ensure the particular resilience of the system and refine the effect of the base mattress in various differentiated spring strengths. Towards the top, the intermediate mattress supports the top mattress GRAND CRU N°1, which reacts at specific points, allowing it to hug the contours of the body even more closely. As with all Schramm beds, the waist springs are hand-drawn and hand-belted in the best upholstery tradition.

Top mattress

The top mattresses are custom-made by hand at Schramm. Using different spring core formulas sensitively matched to your body measurements and sleeping habits, the top mattress cradles your body in an ideal anatomical position and adapts closely to your movements. With multiple differentiated spring forces, the steel springs of different heights ensure optimum pressure equalization along the entire longitudinal axis, for example in the heavier hip and shoulder area. Reacting selectively, the top mattress supports your body contours pressure-free in every position. The vegetative nervous system, which is active during sleep, is thus relieved – there is no need to constantly search for new lying positions, your body comes to rest and finds a relaxed and restorative sleep. On request, the custom-made top mattresses can be adapted to your special requirements in the Schramm workshops in further production steps, for example as an anti-allergy version or with the so-called patented shoulder support for side sleepers, and much more.

The patented shoulder mount

The patented shoulder support shows just how far Schramm goes in fine-tuning and adjusting the top mattresses to individual body measurements. Specially developed for side sleepers, reduced-force springs are used in the shoulder area so that the shoulder can sink in comfortably. In this way, the spring forces on this particularly wide and heavy part of the body are dosed just right. This is further supported by a highly elastic cotton fabric that is only incorporated in the shoulder area and by the absence of longitudinal seams.

The base mattress

To be fully effective, the top mattress needs a stable yet elastic base. This function is fulfilled by the sprung but inherently stable base mattress. Designed differently to the top mattress in terms of its spring core formula, it absorbs pressure and movement not at specific points but over its entire surface and cushions it gently and evenly. In this way, the base mattress literally becomes the basis for a good night’s sleep.

SHIFT function: the motorized adjustable base mattress

Another comfort-enhancing function of the base mattress is its manual or motorized adjustability, depending on your preference. The manually adjustable models allow comfortable head and foot elevation in several stages. The motorized adjustable base mattresses are even more sophisticated: Their up to five movable elements bring you into any desired position. Whether you want to read or take the strain off your legs and spine – your bed moves completely smoothly and almost silently by remote control exactly according to your needs. A particular technical highlight here is the so-called SHIFT technology: when the back section of the base mattress is raised, the entire mattress system, including the top mattress, is moved around 25 centimetres towards the head end. This keeps your upper body upright when you sit up and your bedside table always within reach. It is well thought-out details like these that make the difference between high and maximum comfort.
